First off, I don’t usually address the general controversy in the fandom because there’s always going to be one and talking about it usually makes it worse. But apparently there’s a consensus that Reedus now has an inflated sense of ego because the way he’s talked about fans recently.
Two quotes to start us out:
For the most part, everyone’s super great and I love ‘em. But there’s always a crazy one or two who’s looking for a chance to bump up their followers or something, I don’t know what the hell they’re doing. I’m just an actor on a TV show. I try really hard to do a good job but I’m not running for public office. It sort of takes a huge amount of bravery to be an actor at times.
They wait by the gates to our studio in Georgia,” says Reedus. “I’ll drive by on my motorcycle and they’ll just tail me down the back roads. I’m pretty good on the bike, so I can lose them.
I don’t see any sort of foot-in-mouth happening in his interviews. I don’t see him making controversial statements or trashing fans. Mentioning behavior like this in an interview also isn’t something that’s randomly come about since he got “famous” - before this he’d tell the story of a fan who bought his address on ebay and showed up on his front door.
If you’re badgering him, that’s not cool. Chasing him down in person is also not cool. Read that last quote one more time - people are literally waiting outside their gates in Georgia, and they try to follow him. That’s beyond inappropriate. I know he hasn’t addressed it but you’d be a fool to believe he didn’t read anything related to his latest “female friend.” 99% of that stuff was absolute shit. The way people talked about her, the things that now show up when someone googles her name, it’s all disgusting. I don’t think I could handle hearing people say those things about someone I care for. It would have an effect.
Norman is great. He genuinely cares about his fans. But if you’re getting mad at him for calling out this kind of behavior, you need to check yourself.
He’s not trashing fans. He’s relaying his encounters with fans. If they make you feel ashamed, if they make you cringe, if they make you question your behavior, good. He’s not talking about every fan, he’s talking about a group that could probably use some help. If you take his comments personally, I’d say that’s an opportunity for you to look at your own actions. Him talking about fans stalking him shouldn’t offend you if you have a healthy amount of respect for him. You should be bothered that this is happening right along with him, not sympathizing with the people that act that way.
